Nate Ament was an exciting prospect going into this year’s Summer League, he finished up averaging 11.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.4 AST, 0.6 STL and 0.4 BLK. Lets breakdown his play during the Summer League and look at some player comparisons for him.

Nate Ament, rookie for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Summer League Breakdown

Nate Ament had his highs and lows during this Summer League and I think he did enough to be about in the same place he was coming out of the draft. I think he could have even flipped some speculators thinking he is a through and through “bust”, with some of the good showings and glimpses we saw from him. His best game was against the Charlotte Hornets, in the absence of Brayden Burries it seemed his confidence was boosted and he was able to get more touches. He finished with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, he took control of the game in the fourth and led the Bucks to their first win of the Summer League.

The main problem I saw with Nate Ament to start with was his confidence. He lacked aggressiveness and confidence to start off the Summer League, but as he got some shots and minutes under his belt it made a huge difference. He was really deterred by missed shots and didn’t look like he wanted to shoot if he missed one which was making him a much easier player to guard. This changed as he gained confidence through games and as his shot attempts jumped up. The cherry on top was that he managed to up his percentages as well. I’m excited to see what happens as he gains some confidence throughout the NBA season and once our lineup defines itself, seeing how and where he can solidify himself in the lineup and earn some shot attempts during games.

Ament also struggled with his physicality and strength, but this was to be expected and will simply be him continuing to grow and put on some size and muscle. Although surprisingly he showed many times he wasn’t going to shy away from that contact and he embraced it and showed it can be a key part of his skill set in drawing fouls and getting to the line.

Ament did impress me with his vertical, he looked really good above the rim and I’m hoping he can find more ways to get to those positions. He showed he can be a decent lob threat, especially in transition and if he gets a straight line to the basket, he can also rise up. He looked really good on the boards at times and that will be a really good part of his game that he can implement to the NBA at the start of his career. He also looked great in transition off these rebounds, so I think it will be a key thing for him to get those defensive rebounds and then go coast to coast and convert those opportunities.

Player Comparison

For me, I see a lot of Jonathan Isaac and Brandon Ingram. I also see his rookie year going in a similar blend to the way their rookie years went. He will have lower usage, similar to Isaac, and I would expect that he will be inefficient to begin with.

Defensively

I have relatively high hopes for Ament on the defensive end and I would like to see him apply the pressure defensively when he gets into games. This is where I see the Isaac comparison, I see him in the game using his wingspan to get into the passing lanes and he will be matching up on one of the weaker offensive players at times, so I want him to use that as a chance to play help side defence and get some blocks. Ideally, if he can average a steal and a block, that would be an absolute win for him.

Offensively

Brandon Ingram is a good comparison for him on the offensive end. Ament’s usage will be much lower than Brandon Ingram’s in his rookie year I believe but he will be getting a decent amount of shot attempts and will be inefficient but there will be flashes of what he has to offer. I'm also hoping he will get to the line a good amount with his crafty skills to get some easy conversions for him.

Overall

I think an Ingram and Isaac blend is a perfect idea of what we will be getting. Inefficient scoring in a limited usage role, but I hope he can show some upside on the defensive end and on the boards. Dejounte Murray said once that he was told by Gregg Popovich that defence will get you into games and then you can show and work on your offence. That’s what I see as a pathway for Ament, if he can hustle on the boards, deny lanes and help with rim protection, than he’ll be able to find more time on the court and get more shots up and we can live with him being inefficient as he develops ways to use his offensive talent in the NBA.
