Breaking down the Milwaukee Bucks guard lineup

With the Peyton Watson trade saga coming to an end lets breakdown my prediction of what the Bucks lineup will look like going into the season starting off with the guard positions.

Ryan Rollins Milwaukee Bucks Guard

Overall Lineup

The Bucks currently have 17 players on their roster and need to get it cut down to 15 before the season begins. I think the 3 most likely players that will be on the move are Jericho Sims, Pete Nance and Kevin Porter Jr. All three of these players have made an impact on the Bucks but unfortunately we need to make some cuts and these three are the most capped with their upside for the team and are also taking up valuable minutes for other players to improve with. I believe all of these players will end up on another NBA roster and can contribute well to teams. We will struggle to make a trade with these players as we approach the season but who knows. I could see us taking on a salary dump and some draft compensation which would be an ideal package but with time running out it is becoming less likely.

Another option would be getting a bigger deal done and moving on from some bigger players like Myles turner and or Kyle Kuzma in a bigger deal than the above mentioned, but I don’t see something this large happening before the season kicks off.

Guards

Our biggest log jam is at the guard position with 8 players linked to the 2 positions.

PG - Kevin Porter Jr

PG - Ryan Rollins

PG - Kasparas Jakucionis

SG - Tyler Herro

SG - Gary Trent Jr

SG - Caris LeVert

SG - A.J. Green

SG - Brayden Burries

Point Guard

I think clear cut the starting point guard should be Ryan Rollins and have Kasparas Jakucionis get heavy back up minutes to help his improvement. That leaves us with the outlier, Kevin Porter Jr. He is a great talent but for our young guys to develop it is difficult to find a solid spot for him. You then have the other side of the argument that without the Bucks having their first round pick we should aim to win as many games as possible and sliding Kevin Porter Jr into the lineup will definitely bring a few more wins to our total.

Shooting Guard

Another clear cut starting spot will be Tyler Herro. He is our best player on the roster and will be playing heavy minutes this year if he can avoid and navigate his injury issues. Ideally we have Brayden Burries backing him up and also providing some help at point guard and then A.J. Green coming off the bench and even helping as an undersized small forward at times. This leaves us with Gary Trent Jr and Caris Levert creating issues for us. If we could move off both that would be ideal but unfortunately they will need to prove that they can provide some form of help for a team to take them on, especially Gary Trent Jr with his new long term deal. This can’t happen without giving them significant minutes so I see Gary Trent Jr taking up some heavy minutes off the bench from Burries and Green which will cause issues with their continued development but if we can get him to a point that we can move him by the trade deadline then we open up much bigger roles for them two. Caris Levert will possibly end up coasting through the season until his contract expires at the end of the season which isn’t the worst situation for us but has made it hard having to move on from players unnecessarily now due to his contract size.

Overall the Bucks are in a good situation at the guard position and it's always better to have too many players to choose from at a position than to not have enough talent to pick from. Next time we will go over the forward and center positions where I think we have less of a problem and more of a clear cut way forward.
